It was not like levitation per se, but more like being suspended in the sound.
“The time was 11:00 AM when I scheduled the Sound Immersion experience with Anica Popovic. As a long-time musician and composer, I am a firm believer in the emotional power of carefully crafted sound on human beings. This made me particularly interested in experiencing Anica’s Sound Immersion therapy. I was not in any particular or obvious pain or distress. I had no specific objectives for doing it except to make mental note of the sensations as I experienced them. I will share those now. I lay supine dressed in loose, comfortable clothing on a padded massage table in a room naturally lit by east facing windows for most of the session. The day was cloudy with the morning rain having subsided. The trees outside the window were still and its leaves were just beginning to show tinges of fall color. The room was neatly set-up with an impressive array of brass percussion bowls, gong, and chimes strategically placed around the room. The session started standing inside a large brass bowl which, when struck, emanated not only a low audible frequency but also lower frequency vibrations that could be felt throughout the body. While immersed in this intense vibration, other bowls were stuck and were deftly handled by Anica and presented around my standing form enveloping me in harmonious and sometimes mildly dissonant tones. This was followed by my lying flat on the padded table, as mentioned earlier, while a composed but also improvised performance on the wide variety of bowls and chime ensued. While I believe there was a set-piece for this performance, it seemed to me that she improvised based on the feelings she was sensing from me. I can say that I lost track of time during the session, so I am not really sure how long it lasted. I did not really care about time while I felt the vibrations and listened to the harmonies. I did not notice any sounds from the outside world such as planes flying over or dogs barking as the sounds from the instruments filled the space very richly. Instead of just hearing the sounds with my ears, there was a sensation of having them completely surround me; top, bottom, sides, above, and below. This was especially true when the bowls were in direct contact with my body. But, also, it was so when the instruments being played were off to the side of where I was resting. I did not feel the weight of my body on the table after a while. It was not like levitation per se, but more like being suspended in the sound. It distracted me from feeling the pressure of my body against the table. I noted that my sinuses opened/cleared. I do not think that I started congested, I just noted that they were noticeably clearer. There was one point that the combination of sounds created a sensation that I equated with the term “heavenly”, like a breaking through to a clearer, more ethereal space. It was beautiful. After I thought through the session afterwards, it was clear that this journey in sound was conducted with great concentration and care. When the immersion was over with, I felt relaxed and peaceful. Anica thought that I had fallen asleep but I was completely aware of her movement to the other room as I lay still and reflected on the various and intense sensations experienced during the session.
Some theorize that the fundamental particle of matter is a vibrating string. As humans, we are attracted to harmonious sounds or even those that can shake us to the core. When the sounds that we hear seem right whether in a pretty song or the boom and crash of a wave on a beach, we feel in harmony and unity with everything, and often, everyone around us. Are these vibrations intermingling positively with these fundamental strings that are the basis of all matter? I do not know for sure, but Anica is tapping into what may be that unity (or something else equally powerful) with the playing of her instruments while having an unwavering focus on and interaction with the living person experiencing the Sound Immersion.”
